After a four week hiatus, Stevens TECHnique is excited to END THE SEMESTER with guest teacher

Mark Choi

So take a break from all that final week stress and join us

TUESDAY DECEMBER 8TH

JACOBUS DANCE STUDIO

9 PM TO 1030 PM

Some info about our guest teacher:

Mark Choi, from central New Jersey, is surely a choreographer to keep an eye out for. He is the artistic director of SERCisCompany or SiC, as well as a prominent member of STFU (Styles to Finesse United) crew. He has been dancing for more than 6 years, and he continuously pushes to develop and refine his style. His ability to create and observe things that other people can’t, truly separates him from others.
He’s had extensive experience choreographing and teaching (including his position in SiC) in Kaye Lynn’s dance studio, which had dancers of the Broadway show “Stomp.” He also teaches at A.B. studio and was a feature choreographer of the “908 workshop.
His unique style and technique have only begin to show the hard work and effort that he’s put into his craft over the years. He’s always eager to learn. His love for dance and hip hop is clearly seen inside and outside the studios.

And check out some of his choreo…you might even see a Stevens TECHnique director in the background!!

TECHnique TAP Tuesday! November 2, 2009

I hope that everyone had a safe and happy Halloween and now have many great new stories to tell. Going along with that theme, because this is NEW-vember, I have exciting news for all of you! We will be having a special TECHnique class.

TECHnique TAP Tuesday!

Tuesday 11/03/09

9pm || Jacobus Dance Studio

Thats right, brand NEW for NEW-vember, our great Artistic Director, Anne Marie, will be teaching you the basics of tap dancing. While tap shoes and natural rhythm are not necessary, they are encouraged. ^_^ If you can’t make it Tuesday Night for this TAP class, or you’re already a TAP veteran, then I urge you to try something NEW this NEW-vember. Because as I heard a father telling his toddler while on the ski lift up to a black diamond, if you aren’t living on the edge, then you’re taking up too much space.

Interesting fact about Anne Marie:

Anne Marie was a bit of a medical mystery when she was a child. For some reason, doctors could not determine why she was able to dance before she could walk. However, thanks to an ex-ballroom-instructor-turned-doctor, they noticed a strange heartbeat in Anne Marie. They were able to determine that because she held the music of life in her heart, and through the magic of dance, Anne Marie was able to express the natural rhythm of the world all around her. There have been reports that her dancer smile has both cured and caused blindness.

Hello everyone!

Just a quick reminder that we have a meeting tonight in the Jacobus dance studio tonight (TUESDAY) at 9:00pm. We will be going over (or teaching, if it’s your first time) a beginner hip hop, an intermediate hip hop, and a jazz piece tonight. We will also probably go over what we are about and what we have to offer. I know that EVERYONE AND THEIR MOMS has their general body meetings at 9pm on Tuesdays, but if you want to just come to ours for a few minutes then head out to your other meetings, we won’t take it personally. Or if you want to come to us after your other meetings, we won’t be insulted that we were second pick. Just show up and have some fun!

See you all tonight!

Hello all!

I hope everyone has had a great summer. While you may have been out eating deep fried junk and basking the hot summer sun, the directors have been hard at work to get the ball rolling for this upcoming fall semester! For those of you who did not make it to our meeting this past Tuesday, we have made lots and lots of progress and we have tons of announcements for you all!

Logo White

It’s OFFICIAL

That’s right everyone! TECHnique is in the building! We are an official RSO and have taken the reigns to be the premier dance community of Stevens. We have a budget, we have a schedule, and most excitingly, we have a LOGO! Soon we’ll have banners, t shirts, hats, and all other paraphernalia (you can double check my spelling)!! Trust me! You will WANT to be a part of the Stevens Dance Revolution!

Our First Performance!

You read that right! Our first meeting wasn’t just informational, it was our very first class/rehearsal! That’s right, REHEARSAL! We have our first performance at Stevens Homecoming on

Stevens Homecoming (yea we have one of those)
Saturday September26
1:30pm in DeBaun Auditorium

We will continue to have practices on Tuesdays at 9pm in the Jacobus dance studio. I want to stress though that you can still come on Tuesday nights so you can learn some routines even if you are NOT too hip to the idea of performing with us. Just come see if you like what we are doing. If you like it, LEARN IT. If you can learn it, PERFORM IT! ^_^

Ways to Contact us!

Being that we are an official RSO now, that sets us up with all the perks that comes along with that. That means if you want to email any of the directors then you can send an email to technique@stevens.edu at any time and reach us. Also we have been given a website ( www.stevens.edu/technique ); however, for those of you who have tried to go to it, you’ll find that you get redirected here. But fear not! our talented webmaster is hard at work crafting the perfect site that will fit all our needs. For the time being, this is what you get, which is still pretty freaking fantastic.

Finally, just to reiterate…

Our Next Meeting Will Be on

TUESDAY September 15th 9:15 pm
Dance Studio in the Basement of Jacobus

It will be a welcome meeting for all the new faces that are interested in stretching their dance legs. Basically, we’ll reintroduce our directors, tell you what we are all about and maybe brag about some credentials (fact. anne marie choreographed the main dance battle in step up 3d and is a praised krump master). We will also go over the routines we started last week, and work out our game plan for the next few weeks!

Hope to see a bunch of new faces next week!

Also, thanks to the power of technology, if you’d like to view and share our Google Calender, the link is provided!

Greetings DANCE FAITHFUL!

I know we’ve been on hiatus for sometime, but that’s only because we’ve been working on big things for the coming weeks.

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT!

Tuesday we will have our triumphant return to classes! Sorry for not getting the email out sooner, and I’m sure Kathy will be upset with me, but I just wanted to make sure that we still had our guest teacher coming in. No sense in getting your hopes up if she wasn’t coming in. In any case, without further ado…

Swing Dance with Mary Kelly!

TUESDAY MARCH 24, 2009

9pm in the ATC

That’s right. THE Mary Kelly will be coming in to teach some swing dancing to the lucky few that decide to come in to learn. Aside from being an active student on campus, she still found the time to choreograph and perform in some of the American Culture Club’s various Unity performances. While i don’t really know any of her actual accomplishments, I can only assume that she was trained by the sages of swing dance in ballrooms across America. Word on the street is that she has competed in the World Swing Dance Circuit, and has featured some of her choreography on So You Think You Can Dance: Norway where she was able to bridge the language gap with the universal language of dance (for those of you who don’t know, SYTYCD is very popular in Norway, and they even have a huge hip hop dance conservatory there. but I digress). If that’s not enough, I hear that she is also choreographing Step Up 5: Ballroom Gets Buck (only because Step Up 4: Boarders Only is already in post production with choreography from our very own Anne Marie). So if you are free on Tuesday night then you definitely want to come down and take this class. i promise you’ll learn something new!

Second Announcement

We are putting something together for UNITY 2009. EVERYONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN PERFORMING WITH US FOR UNITY PLEASE COME TO A BRIEF MEETING AFTER THE CLASS AT 10PM. We will be discussing schedule, vision, and requirements for participating. We’re just looking to have a good time, so come down and we’ll talk it out. We are also going to be shooting a CHALLENGE video. if anyone wants to know what that is, please check out this link

So yea, if you are down to run with our crew, stop by. We will be showcasing lots of dance styles and not much experience is necessary. We just want to have some FUN!

That is pretty much it. Thanks for reading, and see you guys on TUESDAY!

To start this amazing new year off with a bang, we will have a guest teacher coming in next Tuesday January 27… just to make sure you remember the date… TUESDAY JANUARY 27 …. TUESDAY JANUARY 27.Katrina Badiola from Fr3sh Dance Company will be coming in and teaching the lucky people that show up. Here is her official bio that can be found on fr3shonline.com

FR3SH Juniors Co-Artistic Director || FR3SH Dance Company Core Dancer

Katrina Badiola started dancing ballet at the age of 3 while in the motherland. After moving to America at the age of 7, she started to train at lyrical and jazz. When she was 12, she became a dance teacher for Acadamy of Dance. She was finally introduced to Hip Hop at the age of 15 and became inspired by the underground Hip Hop scene by her loverly awesome smecksey older brother, Carlo Badiola. She finally auditioned for FR3SH Season 5 when she was 17 and within a year she moved up to the position as captain. She is now a core dancer and loves all her fr3shbians!!!

However this bio hardly does her justice. Now let me tell you a little story about KatrinaBadiola and how she inspired me to dance…. I can remember it very clearly.Katrina entered my life in 2002, when she came to my high school. Out of all the high schools in the world, she had to show up at mine. We slowly became friends and then in the Winter of 2004, she chose me out of all her friends to be her escortfor her cotillion. For those who dont know what a cotillion is, wikipedia it. It’s basically a sweet 16 with lots of dancing and etc. I had been in a few cotillions before that, but they were never like this one. The quality of dance was superb. I was also forced to step my dance game up to just try and match her level, which was astronomical. Since that cotillion, i’ve been obsessed with dance, and I owe it all to katrina.
Katrina must be one of the FIERCEST dancers i know. She has the raw energyalmost equal to that of a supernova, but is able to turn control it with the sharpnessof an exacto knife. To watch her dance may be one of the greatest experiences of your lifetime. Her BOOMS make me jump and her CACKS can bring me to tears. Seeing her take command of the stage keeps my passion for dance burning with the white hot intensity of a thousand suns. Do not be afraid of her though Her words of instruction can teach even the whitest boy how to get down. Her words of encouragement make me believe in the good of humanity, and make me feel like I can compete with the Jabbawockees.
You do not want to miss it.

For anyone who actually follows this blog as well as reads the emails, there was a Boogiezone NJ – Community Class this past Friday (7/14/08) held in Paragon Ballroom in Roselle Park. I had the privledge to atten this hot class taught by Joesar Alva of America’s Best Dance Crew, Boogie Bots. I was fortunate enough to be accompanied by two spectacular dancers here from stevens (Isabel and Anne Marie), so you can ask them how great the class was if you can’t take my word for it. I’ve included the video of his routine, and if you want to learn it, just leave a comment, and we’ll reteach it one class.

Enjoy!
